Connor emerged from the gateway and dropped several feet to the ground. He stumbled. The ground was uneven and shifted beneath his feet as if he were standing on a mound of rocky debris. The skies were almost pitch black but for the lights of a large, glowing platform. Connor glanced upward and saw an arch atop the platform. Howling winds blasted across the landscape, carrying dirt and debris that bounced off his combat suit. Dash stumbled into him, and both slid down the pile of debris.

A CDF soldier helped Connor to his feet. “General Gates, are you all right?”

It took Connor a few moments to untangle his thoughts. They were surrounded by large mounds. Lights flashed overhead, and the wind . . . The wind gusts were brutal. “Yeah,” he said and looked at the soldier. His name and rank appeared on Connor’s internal heads-up display. “Sergeant, thanks for the assist.”

Sergeant Mason leaned down to help Dash.

“I’m all right,” Dash said and looked upward. “I think we dropped five meters before we hit the top of that mound.”

“You were both lucky you landed on it. Some of us didn’t,” Mason said.

Connor watched the platforms flying nearby. There were so many of them. They slowed down when a gateway became active, and dark shapes plowed through. The creatures hit the ground at a run, their thick, muscular bodies absorbing the impact as they headed away.

The soldiers scouted the area, as well as helped other soldiers and Gesora. The Nexstar combat suits had protected them, but the soldiers had still gotten bumped and bruised. The Gesora wore less effective armor and had sustained more serious injuries.

Connor looked up at the sky. The winds still gusted, but the skies were clear. There were no moons, and no rings circled the planet. The few stars he was able to see shone dimly, which was caused by some kind of atmospheric effect.

Survivors gathered in tight clusters. The CDF soldiers had night vision capabilities through their combat suits, but the Ovarrow didn’t. They used bioluminescent sticks to light the area in a deep amber glow.

Connor found Sergeant Rowan’s squad, along with Holzer, Gellner, and Winfry.

“General, Gellner might have cracked a rib. He took a bad fall. Holzer and Winfry are fine, considering,” Rowan said.

“Good job,” Connor said and looked at the rest of the squad. Gellner was wincing as Winfry checked his ribs.

“She said she was a field medic in Field Ops, sir,” Rowan explained.

Connor nodded and watched Gellner.

Winfry glanced up at Connor. “Definitely a broken rib, and he probably bruised a few more. I’ll get him patched up.”

Gellner’s eyes were wide. “Don’t leave me behind. Please don’t leave me behind.”

Connor squatted down so he was eye level with Gellner. “Sit tight. Let Winfry get you situated. We’re not leaving anyone behind, all right? Just sit tight. One thing at a time, now.”

Gellner swallowed hard and blinked his eyes a few times, nodding. He exhaled forcefully. “All right.”

Connor stood up, and Holzer walked with him a short distance.
